Manufacturing Process

Here at Wedgie our aim is to deliver to you a high quality handmade product. Each individual door stopper is handcrafted in Sri Lanka. We manufacture a high quality product through good design and craftsmanship. In doing this we inject money into local economies and increase the earning potential of the producers.

Here’s a quick outline of the manufacturing process...

  • All Wedgie door stoppers are handmade out of Aristonia, which is a plantation timber grown for harvesting its fast growing trunk. The timber is hard and is widely used in the wood based industries.
  • Once harvested the trunk is sawn to desired sizes for various buyers who use it for multiple purposes. We have them sawn and cut to 13" x 2" x 2" bars and delivered to local families that have been specially trained to turn these into wooden wedges. We collect these wooden wedges from their houses in which they turn them out and pay them a fair price for their labour.
  • Having collected these wedges we bring them to our workshop in which we prepare them for painting. This is done by local women workers in and around the area who call over at our workshop. Payment is done on a piece rate basis. These women who have been doing this for a considerable period of time can now prepare quite a few pieces per day by which they earn a fair and steady income.
  • The wedges are now ready for painting and are delivered by us to specially trained painters. Most of these workers are women who work from home while looking after young children. We provide them with everything that is required to finish the wedges, such as the paints, brushes and of course the designs. When completed we collect them, paying a fair price for each wedge.
  • We firmly believe that each stage of the process of turning out this beautiful Wedgie door stopper most certainly helps elevate the standard of living of everyone involved in it.
